Refugee Resettlement

Refugees are under attack, and they need your help. See below for some of the top issues facing immigrants and refugees today—and what you can do.

USCIS FEE INCREASE

In August 2020, USCIS published a new rule that, in a nutshell, exponentially increases immigration application fees, charges asylum seekers for filing asylum applications (for the first time) and removes most fee waivers and fee exemptions. Here’s what you need to know before implementation begins in October.

PRESIDENTIAL DETERMINATION

American leadership on humanitarian matters, including refugee resettlement, has taken a heavy blow over the last two years.  In 2016, the annual refugee ceiling for the U.S. was set at 110,000. Today, the ceiling has been set to just 18,000 refugees — the lowest cap in the history of the United States refugee resettlement program.

WHAT THIS MEANS

The president’s decision to lower the refugee ceiling to historic levels reflects an alarming pattern of closing our doors — and borders — to people seeking protection in America.

This crisis in American leadership will have devastating consequences for tens of thousands of vulnerable refugees, and it will undermine the country’s role as a global player in the eyes of our allies.
